Daybreak is Recruiting!

Dear Readers,

With Cataclysm just one weeks away, I am steering content away from kitty goodness for a brief moment to make a recruitment plug for my guild. Daybreak has been my home for nearly 5 years now and will continue to be so until the day that I stop playing WoW. It is by far one of the most compelling aspects of WoW that keep me engaged in this game due to the fact that the folks in this guild are fantastic people that I have played with for years and years. We continue to be a strong and healthy guild due to our like minded ideals on what we feel is success and enjoyment in WoW. We are not in any way shape or form in need of players but instead we are looking for like minded people that have like minded goals.

So, if you are in the market for a new home, I encourage you to read through the remainder of this post:

Daybreak is Recruiting!

Core Details

Realm: Auchindoun
Battlegroup: Retaliation
Data Center Location: New York
Time Zone: EST

Daybreak is an Alliance guild on Auchindoun-US PVP server of older mature players who have played since the release of Vanilla WoW in 2004. Majority of our core have been playing & raiding together since Molten Core and continue to because of our passion for WoW and the family we have become. Originally from Warsong-US, we moved in Aug 09 to Auchindoun-US where we have since maintained a reputation of being one of the premier guilds on the server. While we are primarily a 25 man raiding guild, we are more than just a guild that logs on for raid nights. We have a strong passion for achievements and on any given night will find folks working on some obscure achievement or farming old content for rare mounts & legendaries

About Daybreak

“It’s more important to play with friends & family, than it is to play for epics”

We are not a guild that prides ourselves on world firsts or server firsts. We pride ourselves in our ability to complete content in a shortened and light raid schedule which does result in many Server Firsts. We will never push beyond our raid schedules, nor will we jeopardize our guild health for epics or Server Firsts. A prime example of this is our decision to skip HLK and HHalion to ensure we went into Cataclysm with minimal attrition and a strong raiding core.

“We love Nerd Points, seriously.”

We are a guild that absolutely loves achievements. We do them while progressing through content and we go back and do them in our spare time as well. We probably as a guild spend more time doing achievement activities than raiding itself. With the imminent arrival of Cataclysm, we have completed 98% (264/269) of all WOTLK raid achievements, most of which have been done numerous times. With the onset of Guild Achievements in the upcoming expansion, rest assured that there will be heavy focus on this as well as personal achievements.

“Respect the guild and respect each other”

Respect each other by being part of the the guild not just a raid. Whether it be helping with achievements, lvling alts, doing old content or just socializing in guild chat. We are must more than just an avenue for purples. Respect the raid by always ensuring you are here when you can and if you can’t, respect the guild by posting and providing awareness that you are not available. We are an older guild and we understand that real life sometimes supersedes WoW and we have no issues with that, as long as we know ahead of time.

Daybreak Logistics

We run on a 3 day raid schedule which consists of Tues, Wed and Thurs from 7-12pm EST and we handle loot distribution through loot council.

Applying to Daybreak

If you’ve read through this and what you’ve read lines up with what you feel is enjoyment in WoW, then I encourage you to give us some consideration. Regardless of what class or spec you are, what experience you’ve previously had. We are looking for like minded individuals. Cataclysm is a restart for everyone and is the perfect opportunity to explore new avenues to enjoy WoW. If you’d like to hear more or have questions, feel free to jump onto Auchindoun and give me a shout. To start your application process, jump to our forums here:

We Are Legendary, a shot of the various Legendaries within the Daybreak.

A shot of our Mimiron Head Army, an optional raid that was run weekly with the objective of obtaining a Mimiron Head for everyone.

It isn't always all about purples and nerd points, we take time to give back to the Auchindoun community (Gordok Ogre Suit Ogrimmar Raid)

Good Bye Park

Patch 4.03a is today (Full patch notes here) and as such the Shattering has occurred and the face of Azeroth has been changed forever. Last night I took some time to hang out in the Park as it will be destroyed with the coming of Deathwing and will on longer exist. By hang out I mean I was hoping that I’d login and get my face melted by Deathwing but looks like there’s no such luck.

Flying Mounts in Dalaran 4.01

Very quick post, the title says it all. Been meaning to post this since 4.01 landed but never had the time. Pre 4.01 there were very easy ways to use flying mounts in Dalaran explained here. Since then those methods were broken and no longer work. At first glance it seems that Blizzard removed the ability to fly in Dalaran but that is not the case. In fact there is an even easier way to fly in Dalaran! Specifically this is in reference to South Bank. Instructions on how to do so are listed below, enjoy!

Set yourself up inbetween the two domes. Keep the diamond on the bigger dome (on the right side) in sight that is your point of reference when flying into Dalaran.

Fly at a 45 degree angle forward, the easiest way to do this is to press your forward key + jump key at the same time. Keep going until you just fly above the diamond on the right.

As soon as you pass the diamond (your point of reference, dive bomb down straight into the South Bank area.

Dalaran won't be the cool place to hang out for long so enjoy this while it lasts!

Blizzard is in the process of releasing a new community website to coincide with the launch of Cataclysm and with it comes a completely new set of forums. To my surprise today during my perusing on the new forums I realized that Alamo has once again provided us with some new” TEECHS” in the druid forums. If you don’t know who Alamo is, then you my friend have been missing out and need to read this ASAP.

Remember all, it was Alamo that taught us that “CAT DRUID IS 4 FITE”

Insane in the Membrane Update

As previously posted yesterday, the Insane in the Membrane FOS has been updated so that Shen’dralar is no longer required. This undoubtedly has caused a lot of rejoicing by some and a lot of negative blacklash from others. As I said yesterday, its best to leave big time consuming, huge commitment FOS type activities alone so that the proverbial shit does not hit the fan. Hope that there were some serious lessons learned from this experience so it doesn’t happen again in the future.

Instant race changes in Cataclysm

However there will be no Realm First achievements associated with leveling characters of a specific race. There will be a slight change to the way paid services work for goblins and worgen. Goblin and worgen characters wishing to change race or faction cannot be in Lost Isles or Gilneas; they must be elsewhere to initiate the process. There are no restrictions on race/faction change to goblin or worgen.
Extremely interesting that they are allowing race changes that quickly. I’m giving this some serious thought to race change (most likely after the grind to 85). Its been 6 years as a Night Elf, so a change would be nice.

Updated Rez Combat Design

The design for combat resurrection effects has changed a good deal for Cataclysm, and we want to make sure players are clear on how spells like Rebirth and Create Soulstone now function. Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown and Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown. On raid boss encounters, you can only use one of these combat resurrection spells (so one Rebirth or one Soulstone) per attempt for 10-player raids. For 25-player raids you can use three forms of combat resurrection per raid boss attempt (so three of any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone). The count is incremented as soon as a player accepts a resurrection, so one can always choose not to accept if he or she wants someone else to get the resurrection instead. There is no equivalent of the Sated debuff (which tracks Bloodlust/Heroism usage), but you will get an error message if you try to resurrect too many players, and we might add tracking to our raid interface if there is demand for it. Outside of raid content, you can use as many battle resurrections as you have available.

For those of you currently participating in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta test, please note that this functionality may not be fully implemented as of yet. If you notice combat resurrections are not currently functioning as explained here, this is just a heads-up about the updated design intent behind them.

Interesting design decision change by Blizzard. Personally I don’t think this is a huge change as most guilds dont run with too many druids in the first place. For example, in my 10 man for WOTLK we only had 1 druid so that meant 1 rez anyways. However in 25 mans we did have 5-7 druids depending on the night which did result in a bunch of rez chains. So in that sense I guess this will have some effect, but then again, if people don’t screw up and die then that makes a Battle Rez irrelevant.

Deathy Blizzcon 2010

If you purchased the DirectTV stream package, you should have received your Deathy pets today.

Red Shirt Guy

If you were able to attend Blizzcon this year or watched the stream, you undoubtedly heard about “Red Shirt Guy”

For those who are not aware, this guy asked a question during the Lore Q&A session with Alex Afrasiabi & Chris Metzen. The question was more of a statement pointing out that their lore was incorrect as one of the Wildhammer characters was not in game which was incorrect based on what was said in the WoW books. Naturally, both Alex/Chris were stumped which made this guy an instant celebrity at Blizzcon. Blizzard not only fixed their error but also honored “Red Shirt Guy” by creating an NPC beside Falstad Wildhammer called Wildhammer Fact Checker.

You really gotta tip your cap to Blizzard, not only are they able to admit they are wrong, but they reward and honor people who play their game. Good on you Blizz!

Insane in the Membrane – Clarified

Today, 16 days after the original response, we finally get a clear and concise answer to the fate of Insane of the Membrane:

And, based on all the posts, emails, petitions, and letters we received following the announcement that the Insane in the Membrane achievement would no longer be in available in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, we started to wonder if maybe we had gone a bit loco. So, we went back to the drawing board. After carefully reviewing all the feedback and discussing the matter amongst ourselves, we’re now happy to report that we will be making the following changes to the Feat of Strength:

* Exalted reputation with Shen’dralar will no longer be required. As this is the only reputation that will be unobtainable in Cataclysm, we’ve simply decided to remove it as a requirement. For those who already earned Exalted reputation with this faction, don’t worry — we haven’t forgotten about your accomplishments. In a future patch, we’ll be adding in a separate Feat of Strength to recognize your deep love of Dire Maul.

* Bloodsail Buccaneer faction reputation will remain in-game. Also, to ensure that this change does not negatively affect Cataclysm quest progression in Stranglethorn Vale, Booty Bay Bruisers will now provide reputation up through Exalted.

This will ensure that players will still be able to attain Insane in the Membrane and “The Insane” title in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Please note, however, that these changes will not take effect until The Shattering in patch 4.0.3a — excluding the separate “Exalted with Shen’dralar” feat, which will be introduced in a future, but currently-undetermined patch. And, of course, those who are already Insane in the Membrane will retain their title and current Feat of Strength. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.

This is good or bad news depending on who you and where you are in regards to completion of this Feat of Strength. This is how I break it down:

Group A – Those who are working on Insane, have not completed Shen’dralar

This group is extremely happy that they did not blow extreme amounts of gold on this or take drastic measures such as xfering servers to buy diamonds. Most likely, more patient people who were willing to take the risk and wait.

Group B – Those who are working on Insane, have just completed Shen’Dralar

This group is probably pretty pissed off that no word was given for so long which resulted in a lot of people blowing a lot of gold and real money to complete this in anticipation for this being removed. Most likely, people who don’t trust Blizzard to do the right thing and took matters into their own hands.

Group C – Those who have completed Insane, prior to Blizzcon

This group, is most likely annoyed (some may be pissed) that Insane has been “cheaped”  or “nerfed” by removing Shen’dralar from the requirement which is traditionally one of the most difficult to obtain in the Feat of Strength. Recall from my prior post, the challenge again is obtaining Pristine Black Diamonds which are world drops and cannot be farmed. While these folks may not have blown gold recently to complete this, everyone who has completed this undoubtedly has blown a lot of gold purchasing diamonds.

Group D – Those who have grinded Bloodsail to Exalted

Of all groups, this one is the smallest. If you are unaware, at this time you can grind Booty Bay Bruisers to revered (11999/12000). Beyond that there is only one method to obtain rep past this which is to kill one NPC (Jazzrik) which provides reputation past revered at +5 per kill. This NPC is on a timer (4-7 mins) and the calculation is approximately 4200 kills or 20+ days of nonstop farming. This is by far the most “insane” of all achievements which provides no achievement or Feat of Strength (at this time). Needless to say, you truly have to be insanely hard core to get this to exalted and it seems this is the one aspect that is not being given any consideration.

So, based on everything that has happened I hope Blizzard has learned their lesson when it comes to making adjustments to time consuming, heavy commitment Feat of Strength’s like Insane. Basically, don’t ever remove it, change it, adjust it. It’s one of those things that you really can’t please everyone because no matter what you do you will inevitable piss someone off so its best to just leave it as is.

So how does this affect me personally? Well, I belong to Group B, the group that took drastic measures to obtain the PBD’s to push Shen’dralar to Exalted prior to 4.03. Yes, I xfered an alt to another server to buy up all the diamonds I needed and xfered them back. I took the worst possible scenario and acted upon it knowing full well that something like this might occur. Am I angry? Not particularly, I’m a perfectionist and having another shiny Feat of Strength is not a bad consolation prize. Needless to say, with Insane no longer in fear of being removed, I can once again take a breather and take my time come Cataclysm.

The Fate of Insane in the Membrane

Those who are regular readers here at Feral Aggression known that I am generally a staunch supporter of Blizzard and it’s decisions. I firmly believe that they generally understand the general public and that the decisions they make are whats best for the game as a whole. However, at Blizzcon something was announced unexpectedly which has caused quite a bit of ruckus and caused me quite a bit of frustration. Specifically, I am referring to the comments regarding the Feat of Strength, Insane in the Membrane.

For those who are unaware, the following statement was made during  the Blizzcon 2010 Open Q&A Session

Response by Ghostcrawler (10/23/2010)
Q: I’m working on insane in the membrane, with all the changes to Dire Maul north will I still be able to achieve this achievement?
A: The biggest problem are the changes to the bloodsail buccaneers, that kinda put a bullet in that feat of strength for now. It’s fun to do painful things in WoW. If there’s a huge outcry for it we’ll try to put something equally brute in the game.

This is a clearcut answer which for all intents and purposes tells us the fate of this FOS. The problem however is the following:

Posted by Ancilorn (Source) (11/18/2009)
Just for clarity, Insane in the Membrane will not be removed in Cataclysm. We can only confirm this one for you, but since it’s undoubtedly one of the most brain-melting achievements, we thought it nice to let you know that you don’t have to rush to have this done before the expansion. 😉

Naturally, a lot of outrage has resulted as of this and the following follow-up was provided:

Posted by Bashiok (Source) (10/25/2010)
Insane in the Membrane is a feat of strength, not an achievement. Feats are things that you can’t be guaranteed to complete, which is why they’re feats and not achievements. Most of them are actually now impossible to complete, and this feat will join a long list of “you had to be there” moments in WoW time.

The feat isn’t being removed of course, those who have it will retain it, however; some of the requirements are, so it will no longer be able to be completed by anyone who has not already done so.

It’s possible that in some very specific situations where someone has completed the reputations which are being removed, but not others that will still be in the game, that it can still be completed. But it’s something we’re waiting for clarity on, and will let you know as soon as we do.

So why is this a problem? First off, Ancilorn’s response was clear cut which states that this would not be removed come Cataclysm. Yes, the follow-up post does state that some aspects will still be obtainable and some will not. However there is no clear indication of what will be “in” or “out” (more on this later). Personally, based on the statement from Ancilorn, I decided to take my time and stock up materials, buying low and saving as long as possible before making my push. Knowing that I have a long runway changed my gameplan significantly. For example, Inscription will undoubtedly offer new Darkmoon Cards come Cataclysm and with the rush to make decks, the cost of cards will drop making for a more reasonable price point.

Instead, now we were left with 7 weeks (or less) to complete this FOS, so now lets break this down even further

  • Revered with Bloodsail Bucccanears
  • Exalted with Steamwheedle Cartel
  • Exalted with Shen’dralar
  • Exalted with Ravenholdt
  • Exalted with Darkmoon Fair

Almost every aspect of this FOS is a time sink grind and with 7 weeks, yes that is more than sufficient time to grind every rep to exalted. Bloodsail is the easiest by far of just grinding goblins in Booty Bay. Steamwheedle Cartel while time consuming is just doing mindless # of Dire Maul runs. Ravenholdt while challenging to get boxes, is possible for the right price. Even Darkmoon Faire can be pushed in a short amount of time if you have the right amount of gold.

The issue comes down to Shen’dralar. This by far is the most challenging due to the limitations of where rep can be acquired from. Specifically the only possibility of obtaining rep (beyond a quest and class book) are Librams. While Librams themselves are easy enough to come by and can be purchased, the primary controlling factor is Pristine Black Diamonds. They are random lv 60 world drop items that are extremely rare and not farmable. So, no matter how many hours I put into farming, I have no way to know whether I will or will not obtain enough diamonds. Being on a low population server, the availability of diamonds through the AH are scarce (and extremely expensive). Even if I did purchase every diamond off the AH, I still would not have enough. This leaves me in a situation where I may have to resort to drastic measures to obtain diamonds.

So, lets summarize what we know and what should be done

  • Aspects of “The Insane” will be removed come Cataclysm or even as early as 4.03
  • Blizzard is “waiting on clarity” to provide a response, however that was 6 days ago and still no feedback
  • There is no clearcut answer on what is “in” or “out”

So, what am I doing about it?

  • I’m currently working on Steamwheedle Cartel (~600/6000 Friendly if I turn in all my Ogre Tanin’s)
  • I’ve currently got someone helping me with boxes (6000/12000 Revered + boxes incoming)
  • I am not farming DMF rep under the assumption that it will continue to be available come Cata (Taking a risk here but I have no choice)
  • I am investigating other drastic measures to obtain Pristine Black Diamonds (Waiting for a firm answer before I take drastic action)

I’m going to have to say that Blizzard really dropped the ball on this one. It’s one thing to give a reversal of their original statement, I can deal with that. It’s also awful that the runway to complete this FOS is pretty short, again I can deal with that because if I really want it, I will put in the time. However, I cannot understand why they are unable to provide a clearcut definitive answer so that we can identify what the priority and what should our focus be on. If you tell me that everything is going to be removed, so be it. At least I know and I can plan accordingly. However if the decision is that only Rep A & B are going to be removed, then I will focus all my energy on A & B and leave C & D for Cataclysm.

Let me make it clear that I don’t care which way they decide to go with Insane, all I care is that they give a definitive answer. This FOS is challenging/time consuming enough as it is, we really don’t need this extra pressure on top of it.

Make a decision Blizzard.

/end rant.
